So those four days in London (of which quite a lot of time was spent at the Barbican…) have been truly amazing and so much fun. To finally see David Tennant live on stage was an experience I’ll not forget anytime soon.
„Richard II“ was all I had hoped for – and some more. The production was beautiful, just beautiful. There have been some small changes made, the cast wasn’t exactly the same as two years ago. But I think it all worked out wonderfully – from Sam Marks as Duke of Aumerle all the way to David’s wig.
Sitting in the third row twice really made us (gently69 and myself) feel David’s energy and emotions. I was close to tears everytime we reached „Of comfort no man speak…“. And I couldn’t help laughing out loud (just like the rest of the audience) when during the matinee on saturday Jasper Britton (Henry Bolingbroke) stomped the stage with such energy that a metal strip just fell down from the edge of the stage and touched down right in front of the audience sitting in the front row. There were two seconds of total silence – and then Britton decided to just play along and improvised a bit. This brought him a round of applause from the audience – as well as a minacious gesture from David’s Richard. Too bad we had seats up on the gallery during the matinee, because I really would have loved to see David’s reaction while he was waiting in the background when Britton maltreated the stage. When Britton left the stage and David walked up to the front, David not only made that wonderful gesture but also audibly said his first three words, „We did observe“, which he normally pronounces in a low voice. Wonderful, just wonderful, both Jasper Britton and David!
I also loved the fact that they seemingly made slight changes to the „I talk but idly, and you mock at me“-moment between Richard and Aumerle. Even more time was given for their embrace. It seemed to last forever. It was so quiet in the room you could have heard a pin drop for seconds and seconds and seconds…
Seeing David on stage three times wasn’t enough of course – so thank god he also did the stage door. This man is unbelievably charming and patient… how can you not love him? He said ‘yes’ to everyone asking for a picture, he answered every question he was asked – and he just smiled, smiled, smiled.
gently and I got some very nice and some pretty blurry pictures, autographs and we even got to have a short conversation with him – what more can a girl ask for?
